Flax Seeds – Super Food

A few months ago, my doctor prescribed me birth control. As soon as I got home, I googled what side effects were associated with the particular brand and read way too many reviews. Needless to say, I was scared because some side effects are a bit difficult to live with.

Now I’m going a bit off topic, the title says “Flax Seeds”. So, why am I talking about birth control? Here’s why: I wear contacts. As it turns out, one of the most common side effects of birth control is difficulty wearing contacts. The birth control affects the moisture in your eyes, making them dry, which makes wearing tiny plastic circles in your eyes very uncomfortable.

I did some research and found that flax seeds help with dry eyes. I ran to the supermarket and bough a container of milled flax seeds. I started putting it in my daily morning cereal. It has absolutely no taste and no texture since it’s milled. It just blends right in with my cereal and milk. I’ve been doing this for about two months. So far, my contacts have gotten a lot easier to wear. Flax seeds have also had an added bonus that I didn’t anticipate.

Last night, I was talking to my friend and I realized how clear my skin looks, and has been looking. This morning, I looked at my face again and tried to remember the last time I had to use tea tree oil to help with a breakout. Wouldn’t you know it, the last time I had a breakout was about two months ago. So, I started thinking what am I doing different? The heat and sweat from summer usually means many more breakouts for me. Then this morning, as I reached for my flax seeds, it hit me. Flax seeds.

Flax seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for providing healthy skin and hair. So, I am hooked. It’s so easy to incorporate in my diet and it’s helping in so many ways.

Ladies, if you are struggling with your contacts for any reason, or want some healthy skin (who doesn’t?), go to your local supermarket and make a trip to the organic or gluten-free isle and get yourself some flax seed.

Authentic Sexuality v Dressing Like Prostitutes

Why do moms let their daughters “dress like prostitutes?” asked Jennifer Moses in a Wall Street Journal piece that got people talking a while back.

Moses thinks it’s because the moms had a sexually free past, which they now regret. “Not one woman I’ve ever asked about the subject,” she declared, “has said that she wishes she’d ‘experimented’ more.”

Well, wouldn’t you want your daughters to NOT look like prostitutes, then?

Zerlina-Maxwell---HannityA proposal: “Blame the criminal, not the victim.” And there’s an uproar?

Last week rape survivor, Zerlina Maxwell, went on Fox’s “Hannity” to discuss rape and guns. But instead of saying women should drink less, dress modestly, arm themselves and learn self-defense, like she “should have,” she told Hannity:

I don’t think that we should be telling women anything. I think we should be telling men not to rape women and start the conversation there… If you train men not to grow up to become rapists, you prevent rape.

And all hell breaks loose. The Blaze calls her words “bizarre.” Blogs and tweets say she should get raped.

“Thanks for the feedback, Internet dopes. Why would anybody think that you need some sensitivity training?” responds Mary Elizabeth Williams at Salon.

Maxwell tells Salon that, “We need to teach (men) to see women as human beings and…

The Misfit Baker

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season! It truly is my favorite time of the year… Today we took the lights down and tucked away the Christmas ornaments, and I must say, our home is looking a little dreary.

I thought that I’d kick off 2013 in an unrefined way… with blueberry oat squares. Not only easy to make, these babies are packed with the goodness of rolled oats, whole wheat, coconut, and (of course) fruit. Then, not wanting to ruin a good, healthy thing, I sweetened them with coconut sugar… Not familiar with coconut sugar? It’s an unrefined, granulated sweetener, made from the sap from coconut buds. I understand that it is nutritious and has a low glycemic index. It also tastes delicious!

What’s the first thing you baked (or plan to bake) this year?

This is just too heart wrenching for me not to reblog. No one should be treated this way, no matter where they are, or their background, or choice of clothing. Animals treat other animals better than humans treat other humans sometimes and it needs to stop.

india_custom-1518355e348bea8a6d0c4118cfadfcef6d37eb4b-s6-c10You’ve likely heard about the 23-year-old woman and her male friend who watched “Life of Pi” at a Delhi theater and then caught a bus home.

The group of drunken men who waved them onto their private bus actually wanted a “joy ride” (???!!!) so they spent the trip beating the pair with an iron rod and gang raping the woman with that same tool. Afterward the two were thrown off the bus and left to die.

The woman survived but her intestines were destroyed. After three abdominal surgeries she suffered major brain injury, cardiac arrest, an infected abdomen and infected lungs. After fighting for two weeks to live, her body finally gave out and she died.

So that a few guys could have a little fun?

Six men have been arrested. And that may be the most surprising part of this story. Indian women are constantly harassed and…
